  1. Neat little presentation Stu. Am just wondering though about actual lathe speed compared to speed of item being turned? Eg. 500rpm as displayed digitally compared to actual speed of blank in chuck? (In this case faster?)Probably some complicated formula to do with “pie” that I wouldn’t understand any way!?

  2. Interesting one Ian – and in this case the speed is 1:1. The DVR motor is quite an incredible piece of machinery and directly drives the chuck – no gearbox, no ratio changes.

    When the motor is set to 250RPM for example, it turns at 250RPM. If you increase load (such as a heavy workpiece, and then start hitting it with a roughing gouge), the motor senses the load and increases power to maintain the speed.

    The display shows 2 speeds – the speed set, and the current speed achieved. Changing the required speed gets a very rapid response from the motor, and it achieves the required speed in impressively quick amount of time.

    Because the motor is constantly sensing load, it can also detect a chisel dig in, and immediately cut power – already had it save me a couple of times!

  3. NOT for posting here (yet) but I would like to send you some pics of an attachment to an Elu DB 180 lathe (1983 vintage) that I need help to find out what it is used for. If that is ok by you, what is the best way to forward pics please?
