Developing the Dust System

Another small development – from the overhead system from the bandsaw, it now leads across the shed to above the thicknesser and drum sander.  This drops down, picking up the outlets from these two machines before heading off to the dust extractor.

The diagonal clear pipe is from the overhead trunking. The drum sander feeds into the top of the Y section.  The trunking then leads to a second Y section which connects to the thicknesser.  Blast gates on each inlet obviously.

It has proved significantly harder to retrofit a new trunking system into an already occupied (crowded) shed.  It means the system is perhaps not as optimised as it could be.  Even though there seemed an excellent selection of parts in the trunking kit, more is needed.  Some longer runs use up joiners that would otherwise be needed for the components.  But I can’t knock having a system where everything actually joins together without duct tape fixes.

I am nutting out how to install my own system and as wondering if you could comment on any losses experienced by drawing the dust up to the ceiling, does this pose a major problem or are the losses minimal. Also what size dust collector (hp or watts) are you using?

    What interests me is the power of your dust collector. I have a 2hp from Hare & Forbes, and I am concerned that, when I eventually get it all connected up, will I have enough power in the vachume.

    I am expecting a moderate impact of lifting the dust to ceiling height, but ignoring the jointer for a second, the dust produced by the bandsaw is fine enough for it to make no real difference, and I don’t think the lathe will cause much issue either.

    The heavy stuff the lathe will produce, and the large bulk of material the jointer will turn out is unlikely to be able to be cleared adequately given the size of my dust extractor, but I’ve had a suggestion I rather like by the manufacturer of the CutSetter, which involves putting a perspex box at the outlet to collect the heavy materials, and the dust extractor creates the vacuum in the box to help the materials get in there (basically another pre-separator)

    As to dust extractor, I’m also running a 2HP unit, so it will be very interesting once I finish this latest system upgrade to see just how well everything works (or doesn’t).

    Back to the jointer for a sec, I also have a GMC stand-alone 1HP collector (the one that has a bag sticking out the side – Carbatec sell one as well- looks like it is just a motor with bag attached). I’m also considering connecting it into the bottom of the riser pipe with a Y section so it is blowing up the pipe. When the system needs a boost…….

    If that doesn’t work (using a Y section to connect it in hopefully will work), then it is likely to be blowing back around the Y section and back into the machine. If that is the case, then I’ll look at putting it inline, so instead of it blowing into an attached bag, the outlet is into the riser and the dust passes through it, rather than it just acting as a blower. One or other methods should work (and if so, will save me making the perspex box), so in essence, I have a solution one way or another. Will keep you posted.
