Been another busy few days, which is rather detrimental for regular blog postings!
I have been working on the next video – thought I’d have it finished by now – hopefully will get a window of opportunity over the weekend to put on the finishing touches. So if you are desperate to see the sander, hold tight – we are almost there.
If you happen to be in the area, I’m demoing at Mitre 10 Mega at Chelsea Heights tomorrow from 10 – 2. Once again, will be taking along some of the new powertools.
Completely off topic, but was at the State Library tonight, videoing a public lecture put on by my faculty at the University in preparation for podcasting it. Doing the podcasts for this site has been really useful for my work, and obviously vise-versa. I’ve always wanted to have a job playing with video, editing, photography etc, and by strange twists an turns, now I do
Finally, I’m curious – how do the majority actually view the videos on this site? Do you watch them directly from the website with the pop-up, download then watch on the computer, download then watch on an mp3 (video) player, or use iTunes to download the show from the associated podcast?
I’m very curious about the new iPod Touch – have one on order, so that’s pretty cool. Not sure if I should offer a higher quality of video for these new devices, but at this stage I will continue to produce video that works on the widest possible range of devices.

Hi Stu – I can’t look at your podcasts because the nice link goes straight to the Apple itunes store, and I don’t have a Mac and refuse to install itunes on my PC. So, if you can make it a lot more generic, and of interest to the other 80% of users
, somewhere that hosts simple mp3’s would be great. Or, if they’re already just downloadable mp3’s, can you change the link so it doesn’t hit the Apple itunes store!
Thanks
Rob
Hi Robert,
Sorry you haven’t been able to view the podcasts to date, however, there is no need to go through iTunes to download the videos. I have provided the direct links in each thread for anyone who wants to download them directly – iTunes is only used as a convenient delivery mechanism. The links are at the bottom of each post that contains the video – looks like:
Formats available: MPEG4 Video (.mp4), Flash Video (.flv)
where I have provided 2 format types depending on your preferences. The mp4 is the higher quality and is viewable with a range of programs.
You can view all the videos in a collection by going to the video tag (in the menu on the right hand side) and all the videos are then grouped together.
You can use an RSS reader pointing directly to that page, and achieve similar functionality to using iTunes. Or, you can simply click on the picture of the video in the blog, and it will pop up with a viewer there and then.
Hopefully that will help you get into the videos!
Regards,
Stuart
(PS, 80% of the users of iTunes are PC / Windows users, myself included – I use both macs and PCs and find iTunes functions perfectly on both platforms. But, I am only using it as a convenient delivery mechanism, I also provide the RSS feed for anyone who doesn’t want to use it).
Hi Stuart
You asked for feedback on how people download/view your podcasts.
I subscribe using iTunes directly to my PC. It’s a great (free) service that lets me download “hands free”.
I really enjoy your podcasts. I subscribe to a number of podcasters, but you are the only Ozzie I can find. Keep up the great work – pretty please.
Cheers
Claire
Hi Stuart,
Greetings from the states. To answer your question, I generally watch the video through the built-in pop-up. If I really like the video, then I’ll pull it down and stash it away on one of my disks.
So far, it seems 45% are using iTunes, 45% watch the popup, and 10% use an RSS viewer. (Real roughly!)
Thanks for the feedback!
In reply to Claire,
As far as I am aware, I am still the only Australian Woodworking Podcaster (should that be in caps?
), and am only one of about 12 woodworking podcasters world-wide.
Guess that makes me a pretty strange fish!
It is pretty cool to feel like I belong to such a small, unique group.
